Ordem dos Enfermeiros (OE) has created the Margarida Vieira Nursing Research Award, an annual distinction aimed at recognising research projects that stand out for their scientific quality, methodological rigour, relevance to the profession and potential application in practice.
The creation of this award also pays tribute to Professor Margarida Vieira, PhD, former Director of the Escola de Enfermagem (Porto) at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, whose career had a profound impact on Portuguese Nursing in the fields of teaching, research and education.
A nurse since 1980, specialist in Child and Paediatric Health Nursing, with a Master's degree in Nursing Sciences and a PhD in Contemporary Philosophy, Margarida Vieira developed a distinguished career in Nursing education and research. Her contribution also extended to the development and recognition of the profession. She was a member of the Founding Committee of Ordem dos Enfermeiros and served as Conselho Jurisdicional Nacional during the institution's first term of office.
The new award aims to encourage the production, recognition and dissemination of scientific knowledge in Nursing, contributing to the improvement of care and the development of the profession.
For the Escola de Enfermagem (Porto) at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, this recognition is particularly meaningful, as it associates Margarida Vieira's name with the promotion of research and scientific knowledge in Nursing. The award therefore perpetuates a legacy deeply rooted in academic excellence, ethics and professional responsibility.
According to the Bastonário of Ordem dos Enfermeiros, Luís Filipe Barreira, “preserving the memory of Professor Margarida Vieira is to affirm the importance of a nursing profession grounded in knowledge, ethics and responsibility towards people.” The award thus aims to keep this legacy alive and carry it forward to new generations of nurses and researchers.
Ordem dos Enfermeiros will announce in due course the opening date and submission deadlines for applications for the first edition of the Margarida Vieira Nursing Research Award.
