Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in cooperation with Transform4Europe, will host on 30 January two workshops dedicated to the Service-Learning methodology, led by specialist Berta Paz. The sessions are aimed at faculty members and researchers from the partner universities of the Transform4Europe Alliance and will take place in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online participation.

The workshops aim to equip participants with the skills needed to implement Service-Learning in higher education, addressing both its pedagogical foundations and its transdisciplinary and eco-social impact, through practical examples and experiences developed in a European context.

Foundations of Service-Learning: Understanding the Pedagogy and How to Start Implementing It

30 January | 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. | Room EC010 and online

This workshop focuses on the core principles of Service-Learning in higher education, exploring the definition, origins and pedagogical foundations of the methodology, as well as distinguishing it from volunteering and other experiential learning approaches. Key components of Service-Learning projects - reciprocity, community engagement, reflection and social impact - will be addressed, along with the full Service-Learning cycle, illustrated with examples from European universities.

Reimagining Interdisciplinary Teaching through Service-Learning: Transdisciplinary Impact and Eco-Social Engagement

30 January | 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. | Room EC010 and online

This session with Berta Paz explores the potential of Service-Learning in disciplinary areas where this methodology is less commonly applied, such as Economics, Business Management, Marketing, Law and the Arts. Through a selection of real project examples, participants will examine the transdisciplinary and multi-level potential of Service-Learning to connect academic knowledge with authentic community challenges, while simultaneously promoting civic engagement, social responsibility, eco-social entrepreneurship and pedagogical innovation.
